We must be careful to relate rise in Hinduism to rise in migrants from India. About a quarter of Indians are of non-Hindu background and immigration will be reflective of that. Additionally, there are many immigrants from countries such as Fiji, Singapore, Malaysia etc who may or may not identify themselves as Indian but follow Hindu traditions and other Indian traditions. This wave of immigrants must be welcome as Indians are multicultural and have a strong root in Democracy. It will help to strengthen Australian democratic institutes and beliefs. Furthermore, like the Vietnamese, Greeks and Italians, Indians are now firmly a part of Australian cultural mix. I hope that more resources will be allocated to service the needs of this hard-working, highly efficient wave of immigrants.
